Child support and spousal support are distinct and separate financial arrangements, and yet the two are often illogically linked in the minds of former partners after a separation or divorce. For child support, Louisiana has established financial guidelines to help avoid inconsistency and/or inadequacy of support awards. Recognized by the courts, the guidelines use a mathematical formula to calculate the amount of support. Although the guidelines are clear, the means of determining income for calculation purposes can be convoluted, especially if one or both spouses are hiding income.
